Support
the Tomorrow Fund

Freddy Benedetti

On September 19, 2005 the GLL lost one if it's own, Freddy Benedetti, following his long battle with cancer. Freddy played on several teams in the GLL and always showed a tremendous passion for the game.

Donations in Freddy's memory can be made to Hasbro Children's Hospital's Tomorrow Fund at www.tomorrowfund.org.

GLL Donates Extra
Uniforms to Students
in Nigeria
Sophia Samuel School, Nigeria

The Glocester Little League has donated several extra uniforms to the Sophia Samuel Kiddies School in Ojo, Nigeria, near the city of Lagos.

The shirts and hats are new, and were either misprints, extras or were new uniforms from businesses that no longer sponsor teams. Rather than have them collect dust in the league's storage trailer, or wastefully throw them away, league president Eric James arranged through a colleague to have them sent to the students overseas.

The photograph above shows the school's "topmost class" with their teachers. The school's proprietor, S.O. Adeyeye, sent a letter to the GLL stating that, "the staff, pupils as well as the parents were equally grateful." for the donation.

NEW GLL POLICY CONCERNING 9 YEAR-OLDS IN MAJORS BASEBALL

MAJORS BASEBALL ELIGIBILITY AMENDMENT

All 9 year-old players must participate in one year of AAA baseball to be eligible to be drafted to or play in the Majors Baseball division.

All 10 and 11 year-old players who have not played at least one year of AAA baseball are exempt from this requirement and will be eligible to be drafted to any Majors team in accordance with existing provisions.

All 12 year-old players are required by official Little League rules to play in Majors unless a proper waiver is filed in accordance with existing provisions.

Requests for exemptions from this requirement must be filed with the Board in accordance with the "Playing Up to a Higher Division" amendment adopted on 12/11/08.

Synopsis: This amendment is intended to require that all 9 year-old players participate in one season of AAA before playing in Majors. Too often younger players have been drafted based on future potential, and spend their season in Majors mostly on the bench. In addition, although some 9 year-olds possess the physical skills needed to participate in Majors, they have not yet matured emotionally enough to handle the increased level of competition. In addition, a player moving up too quickly takes time from an older player who would become displaced.

ADOPTED BY THE GLL BOARD OF DIRECTORS ON SEPTEMBER 17, 2009

LAND WANTED -- THE GLL NEEDS BALLFIELDS
The GLL has almost doubled in size over the past five years, now serving an amazing 550 players on 45 teams! We badly need to expand.

If you know of anyone who would like to donate some land to our league for the specific purpose of creating new baseball fields, please contact league president Steve Porter at SteveP@GlocesterLL.com right away.

GLL'S CHALLENGERS TAKE ON THE PAWSOX

The GLL's Camp Aldersgate Challenger's Team recently participated in a skills clinic hosted by the Pawtucket Red Sox at McCoy Stadium. The event also included game tickets and a barbecue. Thanks to the PawSox for hosting this special "Challenger Day" year after year .

SUBMIT YOUR OLD GLL PHOTOS
2009 marks the 40th anniversary of Little League in Glocester! Do you have photographs of the early days of the GLL from the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties or even Nineties? Please submit them and help restore our league's history. We hear stories every day from parents who played in the GLL
as kids who now have kids of their own playing, and we would like to capture some of that nostalgia. Digital images may be submitted via email to: info@glocesterll.com or can be mailed to: GLL, PO Box 7, Chepachet, RI 02814. All photos will be returned promptly.

BULLETIN FROM LITTLE LEAGUE ON CERTAIN BAT MODELS

NOTICE TO PARENTS, PLAYERS AND LEAGUES: IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING THE PURCHASE OF A NEW COMPOSITE METAL BAT FOR USE IN LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL (Major Division and below), BE SURE THAT THE BAT YOU ARE PURCHASING HAS THIS MARKING: BPF 1.15 ON THE BARREL OR HANDLE OF THE BAT. IF NOT, IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED FOR PLAY IN LITTLE LEAGUE GAMES.

Little League officials are aware that there are bats for sale in stores, online or that may have already been purchased that are Little League approved, but do not have the required bat performance standard (BPF) markings. In fact, some of the bats on the Little League approved bat list may not carry the required BPF 1.15 marking on the bat, depending on when they were manufactured and licensed. Currently manufacturers are conducting an inventory and re-testing of all approved bats. The results of this study / retesting is to be finished by March 31, 2009. We are building a list of certain bats that are approved, but do not have the BPF marking due to special circumstances. For these bats, we are extending eligibility for play until December 31, 2009. As we are made aware of bats that meet our criteria for this extension, we will add them to the list. Please check this list regularly for updates. HOWEVER, ONLY BATS WITH THE BPF 1.15 MARKING AND THE BATS ON THIS LIST WILL BE ALLOWED FOR PLAY IN 2009.

Bats with the special exception include the following:

Adidas Vanquish Blue design (There is a newer model of this bat, also named the Vanquish and it has copper and black markings. It contains the proper labeling and therefore is not subject to the one-year rule).

DeMarini - Black Coyote, Rogue, Distance, Rumble, Tengu, Mach 10, Patriot

Easton - LZ-810, LZ-800, Stealth Optiflex LST 1

Louisville Slugger - YB31

NIKE - Areo

Note: This does not apply to softball.

AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED)
An AED has been purchased for use at Acotes Field. An AED is a portable, automatic device used to restore normal heart rhythm to patients in cardiac arrest. An AED is applied outside the body. It automatically analyzes the patient's heart rhythm and advises the rescuer whether or not a shock is needed to restore the normal heartbeat. The device is intended to be used by lay persons and even provides voice commands. Thanks to GLL Safety Officer Bob Shields for leading the effort to acquire the device, and to our three town fire districts for their donations and support to make this happen.

GLL Challengers
Visit Fenway Park

GLL Challengers at Fenway

Players and their guests from the GLL Challenger Division spent August 31 on a special trip to Fenway Park in Boston that not only included tickets to a Red Sox Devil Rays game, but also included a Fenway tour and a private hitting clinic with Red Sox hitting coach Ron "Papa Jack" Jackson.

Along the tour, players visited the dugouts, the monster seats, the press box and many other behind-the-scenes spots in the historic ballpark. Highlights of their visit were even broadcast on the scoreboard during the seventh inning of the evening's game.

The trip was arranged through CVS Pharmacy. The GLL provided a special bus that brought the players to Boston that morning.

Special thanks goes out to GLL President Eric James for arranging the tour, team manager Beth Keeling for coordinating the players and their families, to CVS for the tickets, and to Papa Jack and the Red Sox organization for their overwhelming hospitality and support.Click here to read all about the Challengers and their special day in the Providence Journal.
